UPDATE: Wednesday, August 7 (10:30 a.m.)

During the past 24 hours, teams in Infrastructure and Sustainability have made significant improvements to the chilled water system which has allowed several more buildings to receive intermittent chilled water as noted in the map below.

They have isolated a leak along Cherry Street in Harrison Square which has allowed the Holland Plant to come back online and they are slowly repressurizing the chilled water distribution system. However, the overall system remains in recovery mode with temporary mobile chillers still in operation at several locations. There continues to be several specific areas on campus that are receiving attention and work will continue today to monitor and stabilize the system.

Buildings shown in purple are receiving intermittent chilled water, a significant increase from yesterday. Those in red remain out of service. Buildings in blue are functional; although, they may not be cooling at normal levels. Service to buildings in purple is improving however, these buildings may be unstable as we continue to prioritize service to research buildings. If a building is not marked as purple, red, or blue, that building belongs to a separate system and is not affected by this incident. Please see the map below and list of buildings and their status. This remains a dynamic situation and building status may change without notice.

Excavation work in Harrison Square continues and an anticipated timeline for complete repair in this area is still being determined. Cherry Street, from Ferst Drive to Bobby Dodd Way, remains closed to both pedestrian and vehicular traffic.

Services to Crosland Tower, the Price Gilbert Library, and the Old Civil Engineering Building have been restored and temperatures are beginning to stabilize.

Any assistance with unmet needs should go through the building manager.

UPDATE: Tuesday, August 6 (10:30 a.m.)

Teams in Infrastructure and Sustainability continue to work to connect and operationalize mobile chillers already on campus with additional chillers arriving this week. These chillers, once successfully connected, enable teams to bring buildings back online once the system is stabilized. Several buildings have been brought back online and turned to blue status. These include the Van Leer Building, Cherry Emerson Building, and Centennial Research Building. The Klaus Advanced Computing Building, Price Gilbert Library, Crosland Tower, Old Civil Engineering Building, and Bunger Henry Building are currently purple.

Buildings shown in purple are receiving intermittent chilled water while those in red remain out of service. Buildings in blue are functional; although, they may not be cooling at normal levels. Please see the map below and list of buildings and their status. This remains a dynamic situation and building status may change without notice.

Excavation work in Harrison Square continues around the clock with movement north on Cherry Street to identify the location of the pipe failure.  An anticipated timeline for completing this repair will be determined once crews examine the pipe and better understand the scope of the damage. Cherry Street, from Ferst Drive to Bobby Dodd Way, is closed to both pedestrian and vehicular traffic.

Additionally, the bypass work to resume chilled water to Crosland Tower, the Price Gilbert Library, and the Old Civil Engineering Building is in progress and will continue 24/7. This bypass will connect these buildings directly to the Holland Plant. Mobile chillers have been ordered for these buildings to increase resiliency in this area.

To help reduce ambient building temperatures, work continues on the planned steam outage. I&S is working with building managers to mitigate effects on processes and equipment.

Lastly, spot coolers are available and can be requested through Emergency Management.

Crosland Tower and Price Gilbert Library remain open however, students are encouraged to use the Clough Undergraduate Learning Commons. Spot coolers are available and all requests for assistance should go through individual Building Managers. Please see the map below for the list of affected buildings (in red).

UPDATE: Sunday, July 28 (7 p.m.)

The ongoing chilled water outage continues to affect cooling systems in several buildings on campus. While initial repairs are complete and cooling systems are being tested, the campus community should expect that cooling systems will remain unstable throughout the week.

Impact on Final Exams
Students should look for communication from their instructors about any possible changes to final exam locations. Course instructors have been advised to (1) use the digital tools available and pivot to pedagogically appropriate solutions, (2) use the originally assigned classroom in its current state, or (3) move to a reassigned classroom.

Impact on Research
Researchers should continue to monitor labs and research equipment to ensure that losses have not occurred or are not at risk of loss. It is vital to thoroughly communicate with your teams to help ensure everyone is aware of the situation and taking steps to mitigate losses.

Impact on Campus Operations
Several buildings are closed until further notice due to inadequate cooling conditions.

  • John Lewis Student Center and Stamps Commons
  • Joseph Brown Whitehead Building (Stamps Health Services)

Impact to Campus Buildings
The chilled water supply remains shut off to many building on campus (red) as reflected in the updated map below. Domestic water supply for taps or faucets is not affected. Buildings in blue on the map below continue to receive chilled water. However, due to low pressure campuswide, these buildings may not be cooling at normal levels.

If you need assistance with mitigation measures including obtaining spot coolers, contact your building manager.

UPDATE: Sunday, July 28 (3:34 p.m.)

The Dalney repair is complete, but this does not mean the system is back to normal.

I&S is adding chilled water back into the system and slowly pressuring buildings to ensure there are no further leaks, failures, or setbacks. The system remains unstable at this time. Mitigation efforts should remain in place and regularly monitored. Building managers should report any issues immediately. PIs/Faculty/Researchers please check your labs and research equipment and ensure that you have not experienced any losses, or at risk of loss. If you are not sure who is checking, communicate with your teams. Do Not Assume.

Please Note: Crosland Tower, Price-Gilbert Library and the Old Civil Engineering buildings will remain off the chilled water system until the bypass can be finished with an expected timeframe of 2 weeks.

Monday and this week: Do not expect to have cool buildings tomorrow. Staff should be prepared to evaluate locally and make operational recommendations to leadership.

Exams: Planning for alternate exam locations should continue in earnest and should not expect to have satisfactory environmental conditions tomorrow.

Mid to long term: The Dalney repair is only one of several repairs needed. The Dalney repair is temporary and eventually will need to be permanently repaired, requiring a planned outage. The issue in Harrison Square remains valved off and this will put increased load on the 10th Street chiller plant.

The overall system will be highly vulnerable over the next few weeks until permanent repairs can address both Dalney and Harrison Square.

Vigilance, continuity planning, and communication will be key to minimizing impact during this time. Continuity planning is a unit-level responsibility. Expect interruptions and plan accordingly.

UPDATE: Sunday, July 28 (9:38 a.m.)

Repair work and mitigation measures continue. Building managers should be on site to assist in checking their spaces and reporting any issues. Representatives from labs should be checking their environments to ensure no issues with research or equipment. Academic Affairs is planning for relocation of exams scheduled for tomorrow. Please continue to check this page for further updates.

UPDATE: Saturday, July 27 (6:20 p.m.)

Infrastructure and Sustainability (I&S) has identified the failure point and repair work continues. The timeline for completion remains fluid. Requests for mitigation or other assistance should go through the building manager.  If you or your team identifies something that needs to be addressed, contact Director of Emergency Management & Communications Will Smith at 404-593-1030. Consider impacts lasting into next week. When the repair is complete, it will take time to get the system back online and for the buildings to recover. Continue to check this page for further updates.

UPDATE: Saturday, July 27 (1:30 p.m.)

The repair work is underway. Continue to check this page for further updates.

UPDATE: Saturday, July 27 (9:00 a.m.)

Recent discoveries are necessitating an emergency repair to the Georgia Tech chilled water system.  Teams are preparing to begin these repairs today.

This requires shutting off the chilled water supply to additional buildings on campus (red) as reflected in the updated map below. Much of campus will be without cooled air for an undetermined period, including research facilities. Domestic water supply for taps or faucets will not be affected. The emergency repair could take at least 48 hours to complete.
